Harare - Di tengah maraknya pernikahan perempuan di bawah umur gadis Zimbabwe ini memilih taekwondo sebagai bentuk pertahanan dan keluar dari kemiskinan.

Di Zimbabwe, gadis-gadis berusia 10 tahun dipaksa menikah karena kemiskinan, tradisi adat, atau agama.

Orang tua sering menikahkan anak-anak perempuannya di usia muda untuk mengurangi pengeluaran makan dan pembayaran mahar adalah tambahan penghasilan bagi mereka di Zimbabwe.

Bahkan ribuan anak di Zimbabwe berhenti sekolah untuk berumah tangga meskipun pengadilan memutuskan tak boleh ada orang yang menikah sebelum berusia 18 tahun.

Namun berbeda dengan seorang remaja bernama Natsiraishe Maritsa (17). Ia memilih menggemari seni bela diri sebagai bentuk pertahanan diri.

Maritsa menggunakan olahraga ini untuk memberi kesempatan hidup bagi anak perempuan di lingkungannya yang miskin.

Ia yakin banyak hal yang bisa dilakukannya untuk menyelamatkan keluarga dari kemiskinan selain dengan cara menikah dini.

Terbukti dengan banyaknya lomba yang telah ia menangkan, membawa Maritsa menjadi perempuan muda yang berprestasi.
